My Danish Viking army is based on the list available in the
Shieldwall supplement to WAB. I enjoyed putting this army together and painting
it. The army consists of: 1x22 man Hird unit plus the General and Army Standard,
1x24 man Hird unit, 1x16 man Hird unit, 2x25 man Bondi units, 1x16 man Bondi
unit, 37 Bondi archers (usually field less than 20 though), 15 Gestir, and
8 Ulfhednar. I’ve had pretty good luck with the army, but some of that
is due to the T4 Hirdmen which are very tough to face (I would have liked
to see them portrayed differently, but that is another story). You may also
notice that I don’t take any Beserkers…I just don’t like
the way they are portrayed either, and instead I take the Ulfhednar which
I’ve had really bad luck with.
That said, this army allowed me to use some washes on the hair to get different
shades. GW Flesh Wash over light colors up through a medium brown gives a
good effect for hair with a “reddish” tone IMO. I also tried something
different with the armor. Prime black on the armor, then dry brush GW Chainmail,
then go over it with Smoke from Tamaiya…it is hard to tell in the pictures,
but this effect is really nice IMO. Previously I had been white priming the
armor, painting it with Folk Art Metallic Gun Metal Grey and either washing
it or using Tudor “Dip” on it. Lastly, I like the few Dark Age
Design decals I mixed in on some shields as well as those I used on some of
the flags…good job Tony!
